Zatarain’s Jambalaya Throwdown

July 11, 2009 By Jeff Young Leave a Comment

I admit it.

I’ve never used Zatarain’s Jambalaya Mix.

Now, it’s not that I have anything against Zatarain’s. I just like to make it up myself. Not to mention the fact that boxed and canned foods tend to have all kinds of nasty ingredients. Like MSG. And enough sodium to preserve an Egyptian mummy for another couple of thousand years.

And then there’s the principle of it all. I mean, if you like to cook, why use a mix? I know. Some people might take offense at that question. And there are some who love to cook, but they live under the patronage of St. Expeditus… they’re always in a hurry.

But, I have to say, Zatarain’s Jambalaya Throwdown has piqued my interest.

It’s 12:30 AM. I’m tired. I don’t know why I am still awake. Well, OK. I do know. Two reasons. First, I am a night owl. Second, I didn’t wake up this morning until 10:30. Ain’t summer great? But I am tired. And I just discovered this contest. Why haven’t I heard of this before???

So, what do you think? Should I enter the throwdown?

I don’t think I stand a chance of winning. I am sure there are hundreds of jambalaya kings out there ready to take that $2500 to the bank. But, I am the Catholic foodie. Perhaps there is a patron saint of jambalaya or something. A novena in my corner may help… not to mention all of your prayers, right? Right?

I tell you what. If I win, I’ll take you out to dinner. No. Better. I’ll cook the winning jambalaya for you. How’s that?

And one thing’s for certain. Once I come up with my magical Zatarain’s recipe – whether I win or lose – I will post it here. That way, I’ll at least win a few friends!

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

***UPDATE: I just found the “official” promo for the contest. It features Chef John Besh. Check it out.***
